Personal Biography

Julija Bagdonavičiūtė studied at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy (class of prof. A. Žvirblytė) and Weimar F. Liszt High School of Music (prof. B. Szokolay). She obtained her Master's degree in Hannover University of Music, Theatre and Media, in the class of Prof. E. Kupiec. Since 2023, Julija is Art Doctoral student at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy of Theatre and Music. 

Julija has performed in Lithuania, Italy and France, Germany, Hungary, Finland and Sweden, Portugal, Croatia. She has also participated in masterclasses with pianists such as R. Dalibaltayan, A. Delle Vigne, P. Devoyon, E. Indjic, D. Yoffe, K. Kenner, F. Pavri, Hui-Ying Liu Tawastststjerna, E. Tawaststststjerna. From 2020, Julija is a scholarship holder of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Live Music Now Hannover. 

She actively performs not only as a soloist, but also with chamber music ensembles - together with Meta Piano Trio she participates in international courses and festivals not only in Lithuania, but also in Austria, Portugal, Germany, Estonia. 

Julija also takes part in various contemporary music projects. One of them - contemporary music project "Blicke" in Hannover, where in 2021 the pianist presented the work of Tristan Murail. In the same year, the pianist was awarded with Ernst von Siemens Scholarship for the promotion of contemporary music. In 2023, Julija participated in interdisciplinary art projects (Concerto and installation for piano and a piece of furniture; (C)AM(E)R(A) for piano, two video cameras and seven objects) and presented these works at the International Performing Arts Festival ConTempo, the Youth Theatre Festival Išeities taškas, the Culture Days Festival in Marijampolė. 

In 2024, together with pianist, curator and doctor of arts Marta Finkelštein, she became interested in the instrumental composition of the piano duo – pianists worked together on the programme PIANOS [modified, prepared, extended, amplified] and also contributed to the organisation and curation of the annual workshop Kosmos Lab, whose main mentor was composer, multimedia artist Pierre Jodlowski. 

For her musical achievements, Julija received a honorary prize from the President of the Republic of Lithuania. In addition to her concert activities, pianist is also the executive producer of the international summer academy for pianists - the Klaipėda Piano Masters Festival.

Meta Piano Trio

Formed in 2018, Meta Piano Trio won the first prize at the XVIII International Lithuanian Composers' Chamber Music Performance Competition in Vilnius. In 2019, Meta represented the country at the international chamber music festival "Harmos" in Porto, Portugal, and took part “International Summer Academy - ISA” in Austria, where they were awarded the Audience Choice Award. 

Constantly generating new concert programmes and searching for new forms of representation the piano trio genre, the ensemble regularly performs in the most important Lithuanian concert halls, such as the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall, Kaunas Philharmonic Hall, Klaipėda Concert Hall, as well as in concert series abroad. 

The ensemble has been awarded GRAND PRIX prizes at the 5th Vilnius International “Youth Music Competition "Premio Scarlatti" and the 21st International Festival-Competition "Music Without Borders", 2nd prize at the 8th Stockholm International Music Competition in Sweden and 3rd prize at the 1st International Piano Chamber Music Competition "Tallinn 2021" in Estonia. In 2022, Meta was awarded the Finalist Diploma at the 9th International S. Vainiunas Piano and Chamber Ensemble Competition. 

All members of the trio have extensive experience not only as chamber music performers, but also as soloists - they have performed in various venues in Lithuania, Germany, Italy, Finland, Hungary, France, Great Britain, the United States, China, Russia and South America. The musicians have performed at the Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Konzerthaus (Berlin), St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Roundhouse (London). As an ensemble, they have honed their skills with artists such as Pascal Devoyon, Daniel Garlitsky, David Gering, Kevin Kenner and Barbara Lüneburg. As an ensemble, they have participated in masterclasses by Hatto Beyerle, Avedis Kouyoumdjian, Othmar Müller, Johannes Meissl, Candida Thompson, Marta Gulyás, Patrick Jüdt, Peter Schuhmayer, Hanns-Martin Schreiber.
